Andrew Coughlin is a patent attorney focused on U.S. patent prosecution across a wide range of technologies. He brings over 15 years of experience from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), where he served as both a Primary Examiner and Patent Reexamination Specialist. His in-depth knowledge of patent examination, reissue, and reexamination proceedings informs a practical, detail-oriented approach to securing and protecting intellectual property rights.
While at the USPTO, Andrew examined and evaluated hundreds of patent applications in areas including semiconductors, display manufacturing, and LED lighting. He was regularly recognized for high performance and quality, earning the Department of Commerce Bronze Medal. In addition to his examining duties, he held leadership and training roles—mentoring new examiners, training within the Patent Training Academy, and serving as Acting Supervisor to support team development and quality assurance. As a Reexamination Specialist, he engaged directly with patent owners and litigants, helping resolve complex issues arising during post-grant proceedings.
Andrew earned his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he was a Chicago Intellectual Property Colloquium Fellow and received multiple CALI Awards. He holds a B.S. in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is admitted to the Illinois State Bar and registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
